April 11, 1955 saw the beginning of Tae Kwon-Do when General Choi Hong Hi presented the concepts and name of this Korean martial art to a group of Korean leaders. General Choi, the inventor of Tae Kwon-Do, was able to do so only after exhaustive research, experimentation, and study.

A holder of a Japanese-style Karate black belt, General Choi merged refined techniques from TaeKyon (an ancient Korean martial art), Karate, and Kung-Fu to form a martial art based on proven scientific principles of energy, power, and movement. Gen. Choi's personal style of the art is named chang-hon.

General Choi's Instructors who were the original Taekwondo Pioneers spread the Art in the 1960's since then Taekwon do has grown in popularity and is now taught in nearly every country in the world. It is most famous for its spectacular and dynamic kicking techniques, although this has led to the misconception that Taekwon do is just a kicking art .

Taekwondo does indeed make extensive use of the legs, since the legs are longer and more powerful than the arms, but kicks make up only a small fraction of the total number of Taekwon do techniques. There are also blocks, punches and strikes as well as basic throws, sweeps and grappling techniques making Taekwon do a very effective system of self defence.

The wide range of techniques caters for all types of situations, and students are taught to defend against single and multiple opponents standing, on the ground and against weapons.

Today there are two different styles of Taekwondo the I.T.F. [ International Taekwondo Federation ] and the W.T.F. [ World Taekwondo Federation ] these two groups are the main governing bodies in Taekwondo but due to politics in both these groups their are many Independent Taekwondo associations and schools who base their teachings on either style.
